The night, told again

Clear wave 16 and the next Gauntlet tells the same night again: the same men, the same fight and the same words at the table, with a different reading of who did what and why. There are three tellings. You have just read the first. The other two change what everything meant, so they are folded away. Open them only if you would rather not find out in the game.

Telling 2 · Nina

Nina is the villain

The same night, nearly the same words, and nothing Nina ever said was a lie. She learned at sixteen how her father broke Danny Marsh, and she stayed. She told him about Teo. She kept Teo standing through every wave, because a man who reaches the Don’s table angry, undefeated and covered in the family’s blood is the only thing that can stop an old man’s heart without her touching it.

Papa. Sit down and listen to him.

She doesn’t move.

They could see it from any roof.

She loved him. It was never the point.

They will send more.

The ring on her hand was her father’s.

Telling 3 · The fourth round

What Teo has always believed

Danny Marsh told his son he refused the family’s money and was made to pay. In the spring of 1998 he took it to lose in the sixth, because Teo’s mother was ill. In the fourth round a low blow, and the punch he had trained twenty years to throw dropped Lenny Brandt before he knew he had thrown it. He had sold a fight he could not lose. Nobody here is lying to Teo except Danny, and Danny is not at the table.

D. Marsh. March 14, 1998. Received.

He wouldn’t take your money.

He took it in March. He had spent it by June.

I’m sorry. I found it when I was sixteen.

Eight years old. His father’s corner was red.

He had sold the sixth. He couldn’t sell the fourth.

Then why do you keep winning them?

Because that is the one thing neither of them could sell.
